What would be your responsibilities?

Responsible for procurement of poles and providing fiber to manufacturing locations to meet production requirments.  Under the guidance of the Director, the Forester works closely with the Woodlands Manager(s) staff to develop a sustained annual harvest of poles within the management plan and goals.

We need you to:

  • Provides a continuous supply of barkie poles to accomplish established annual production requirements.
  • Cruises land to determine volume, size and quality of timber stands.
  • Assesses timber sales from Ontario/Quebec sales and MNR rules.
  • Oversees logging contractors on timber sales and purchased tracts.
  • Inspects and evaluates potential timber sales and follows up with successful purchasers for possible pole production.
  • Marks barkie poles in standing timber, and trains contractors to mark standing timber.
  • Purchases and balances raw materials inventory to meet required production levels.
  • Monitors barkie yields to ensure cost efficiency is maintained and budget requirements are met.
  • Maintains and develops new relationships with suppliers of barkies and fiber.
  • May contact carriers to arrange transportation of purchases.
  • Ensures proper quantity and quality of materials received at locations.
  • Supervises manufacturing of barkie poles to ensure quality control and directs sizes toward company needs.
  • Day-to day contact with and supervision of contractors and suppliers
  • Works closely with the Woodlands Manager(s) on managing woodlands goals, and planning all activities to meet legal and financial objectives
  • Visit all pole potential area on crown land & evaluate the pole potential, including pole volume estimation in standing timber.
  • Follow and visit regularly all active pole harvesting sectors on crown land during operation time.
  • Collaborates with coworkers, log buyers, accounting, contractors, consultants and members of the public.
  • Communicates regularly with other staff to ensure personnel, reporting, organizational, or system requirements or issues are raised and dealt with the goal of continuous improvement.
  • Assists in preparation of fiber supply forecasts, including a monthly estimate of pole volume to be produced on each individual job.
  • Assists in the preparation of budgets, accruals, forecasts and manages spending to achieve goals
  • Reviews and signs off on supplier statements
  • Audits and inspects inventory quality and profile at white wood pole suppliers.
  • Regularly updates the Director on work status.
  • Collaborates with EH&S (Environment, Health and Safety) Coordinators to ensure compliance with and understanding of workplace regulations and policies.
  • Identifies new ESG opportunities, and reports discovery to the Director for evaluation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Travel Required: 80%

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with Forestry Based Programs

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Forestry studies, College or University
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Clean Driver’s License Abstract
  • Registered Forestry Professional (preferred)
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Forestry Field.
  • Knowledgeable of forest practices, legislation and administration in North America
