The Plant Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations including receiving, production activities, maintenance, quality control and expedition. Manages operational budget and cost control, labor (non-union), environment, health and safety, capital expenditure and the TRD program.

Responsibilities

PRODUCTION/OPERATIONS

  • Oversees plant operation through receiving, production activities, maintenance, quality control and expedition
  • Manages operations schedule and production with sales department, shipping department and plant supervisors
  • Maximizes utilization of materials, productivity of the labor force and quality of products by establishing operating procedures and controls that effectively and efficiently utilizes personnel, materials, equipment and capital machinery
  • Manages chemical and product inventories to meet customers’ expectations
  • Inventory control: actively organizes, monitors and participates in cycle and annual inventory counts
  • Manages yearly inventory count with external auditors
  • Manages maintenance program to keep the plant safe and operational
  • Monthly and quarterly updating of budget/forecast numbers
  • Prepares yearly budget for Manufacturing cost and Mobile equipment
  • Reviews thoroughly plant operation cost and capital expenditures on a regular basis to meet budget
  • Coordinates annual capital expenditures project
  • Supervises facility improvements projects
  • Submits potential projects/improvements to increase production efficiency
  • Is available for on call emergencies

LABOUR MANAGEMENT

  • Manages all supervisors and other direct reports
  • Oversees the labour management of a unionized environment
  • Manages payroll transactions through the payroll system
  • Handles employee relations and performance management
  • Handle new hires, training and job posting
  • Responsible to enforce plant guidelines
  • Manages supervisors and employee vacation schedule
  • Deals with Ministry of Labor on different issues/requests
  • Performs other duties as assigned

ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH & SAFETY AND TRD PROGRAMS

Works closely with the Health and Safety advisors to:

  • Manages, maintains and enforces the health & safety program
  • Provides leadership and guidance on occupational health and safety programs
  • Trains and develops employees on safety process and procedures, and cross functional development
  • Actively participates in the health and safety committee

Works closely with the Environmental Manager to:

  • Manage, maintain and enforce the TRD program and yearly certification
  • Oversees the environment program and monitoring for the plant
  • Coordinate communications with environmental authorities (local, provincial and federal)
  • Ensures environmental reporting is done on time

EDUCATION:

  • • Grade 12 minimum
  • • Production management and/or productivity improvement and/or reduction of operational cost certifications (preferred)

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

  • • Minimum 5 years of related experience
  • • Supervisory or Production Manager experience

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • • Valid driver’s license
  • • Clean Driver’s license abstract
  • • TRD auditor training (to be provided)
  • • TDG training
  • • WHMIS training

LANGUAGE:

  • • Proficiency in English, spoken and written

CORE COMPETENCIES:

  • Experience in a union environment
  • Knowledge and experience with ERP systems (SAP preferred)
  • Experience in a EH&S management program environment and knowledge of health and safety standards (NS)
